The Great Depression
The GD was a massive wakeup call to the American people, making them realize the actual effects of paying with what they don’t have. An economic collapse caused the public to believe that American life as they knew it would end. I think this was an overreaction; at the time, it probably seemed to be the beginning of the end, but now it seems like a bit of a hick-up. Especially for those in the lower class, with 1 in 4 houses being unemployed. Even with this devastating statistic, the rich got richer, “per capita income had risen 10% for all Americans, but 75% for the nation’s wealthiest citizens.” We are still faced with the devastating reality of unemployment and the knowledge that money makes money makes money. These two issues combined result in those unemployed in the lower class continuing to go further into the hole while those who are unemployed but born into money can sit on it and multiply their riches.
